Civil Partner & Same-Sex Relationship Visas FAQs
Can I sponsor my same-sex partner to join me in the UK?
Yes, the UK immigration system permits individuals in same-sex relationships to sponsor their partner, regardless of whether they are married or in a civil partnership. The same visa routes apply as they do for heterosexual couples.
We’re not married yet – can we still apply?
Absolutely. If you’re engaged and planning to marry or register a civil partnership, you may be eligible to apply for a Fiancé(e) or Proposed Civil Partner Visa. This route allows you to enter the UK for up to six months to marry or formalise your partnership, after which you can switch to a Spouse or Civil Partner Visa.
Will my application be treated fairly as a same-sex couple?
In most cases, yes. However, while the Home Office is bound by anti-discrimination laws, applicants in same-sex relationships may face unconscious bias or requests for additional evidence. No. The financial threshold is exactly the same. You will need to show that your sponsor earns at least £29,000 per year (as of April 2024), or that you have sufficient savings to support your stay without access to public funds.
If I was previously in a heterosexual relationship, can I now apply based on a same-sex partnership?
Yes, you can. However, it’s important to clearly explain the transition to your current relationship in your application. Evidence of your current partnership, as well as honest and respectful handling of your previous relationship, will be key to a successful outcome.

Shocked and surprised!
I entered the HM & Co Solicitors on Lower Road in what can only be described as a highly agitated state. I had been told a variety of information from another company and had been told I needed services from a solicitor. After explaining my situation to the gentleman I now know as Mr Hakeem Ayantayo (solicitor) he advised me that I did not need his services and to offer them to me for monetary gain would be against good public practise. He offered me friendly advice and even briefly spoke on the phone to the other company who were trying to make things difficult for me. Ultimately the situation I was in was resolved due to Mr Ayantayo and his due diligence. Mr Ayantayo could have taken advantage of my ignorance and lack of lawful knowledge but instead showed me kindness and support all while not fleecing me! Which in this day and age is a rarity!
